Mashed Potatoes (Translated from German)
Mashed Potatoes!
Just in time for Thanksgiving. This recipe is pretty basic, so there is a possibility she wrote this when first learning to cook; as it is in her childhood German notebook/cookbook. But, since I’m a potato lover, this is good, as always.
For a creamier touch, add cream instead of milk. And for a richer flavor (remember Grandma always had salt available on the table vs too much in her meals) add more salt and margarine.
Here is Grandma’s recipe card:
And this is the printable recipe with tips for modifying the mashed potatoes.
Mashed Potatoes
(translated from German)
- 2 lbs potatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon margarine
- Peel (not indicated on Grandma’s recipe, but I think she adapted to peeling them to suit her family’s taste) potatoes. Cook in water with 1 teaspoon salt. Once soft, mash.
- Heat milk and margarine separately and add to mashed potatoes.
- Mash potatoes further, season with salt and pepper.
TIP: Add cream instead of milk for richer flavor. Modify the margarine to suit your taste.
Garnish with green peppers.
